Wedding Photography FAQs

Your Questions Answered

Q: What style of wedding photography do you offer?

A: My style is pretty, informal, relaxed and natural. I love to get as much light and as many genuine emotions in my images as possible. Officially, the term for my type of photography is 'lifestyle' as it combines the increasingly popular documentary style photos with traditional posed photographs for group portraits. This means you get the best of both worlds: incredible natural moments as well as beautifully composed images with your family and friends. The split is about 50/50 so half of your photos will be candid, natural moments and the other half will be a little more composed.

Q: Will you make us do any awkward or cheesy poses?

A: Absolutely not. Your photographs will look so much better if you're both happy and comfortable with what's going on. We'll have met up before your wedding to discuss what you like and dislike so I'll know in advance. I can certainly make suggestions for how you might want to stand / sit for your couple portraits and will get everyone into position for larger shots like your bridal party photos but then I'll stand back a little and just let you all enjoy the moment!

Q: Do we need to write a shot list?

A: There's no need for you to write a shot list. We'll run through the order of the day at your pre-wedding consultation and compile a list together of the people you'd specifically like photographs taken with and when we will do these. For example, if your grandmother can only stay a short while after the ceremony, we would prioritise photos with her first.

Q: How do we get a great confetti shot?

A: Oh my gosh, confetti is one of my absolute favourite things! I just love it so much; the atmosphere, the buzz and excitement, the cheering and the stunning photos it creates. Several tips I give to all my couples, these include:

  • Don't rely on your guests to bring confetti, other than your mum and the occasional aunt, nobody else remembers to bring any

  • Buy confetti in advance (and in bulk) from eBay as it's much cheaper than buying individual packs from the shops

  • Check with your venue; most allow confetti if it's biodegradable but some indoor venues do not (bubbles are a good alternative).

  • Do not leave confetti in boxes or put it in cones or bags. As pretty as these things look, they actually detract from the photos. You want to see confetti in the pictures, not cones, boxes or bags.

  • Pop all your confetti into a pretty basket and ask your flower girl / pageboy / bridesmaids to give this out to the guests while you're signing the register. As you walk down the aisle, they'll be able to throw the confetti high in the air then clap and cheer with nothing left in their hands.

  • Buy a mix of colours and shapes, this really makes your photos pop!

  • Book an experienced photographer who can co-ordinate and capture some incredible confetti photos for you both

Q: Do you set a time limit?

A: No, I don't set a specific time limit on the Rose, Champagne or Diamond wedding packages. Coverage typically starts around 1.5 hours before the ceremony and finishes around the second or third dance. Couples can extend their coverage beyond this for an additional £75 per hour.

Q: Which areas do you cover?

A: I'm based in Maidstone so typically cover weddings all across Kent as well as in London, Surrey, Essex and Sussex. I can also be booked for destination weddings and have recently travelled to Croatia and Las Vegas to photograph couples on their big day.

Q: How do we book?

A: You can contact me to check availability on your chosen date and request a booking information pack. The pack contains my latest brochure as well as a booking form to read and complete at your leisure. You can either then return the booking pack to me in the post or arrange to meet up in person to view sample albums and ask any Qs you may have. A £250 booking fee (deducted from your balance) is then payable to secure your date. The final payment is due 12 weeks before your wedding date.

Q: How long will it be until we get our photos?

A: I send a good selection of preview photos to my couples within a couple of days of the wedding, typically around 50-75 preview images. During peak wedding season (May - September) your completed online gallery may take around 6 weeks or so but at quieter times of the year it can be as quick as 3 weeks. If you've ordered albums, you can expect to receive those within around 4 weeks of making your selection of cover image.

Q: How many photos will we receive?

A: This depends on a number of factors including: the number of guests at your wedding, the length of the day, the venue, how long the meal takes, etc. As a guide, expect to receive somewhere between 600-900 fully edited images. You will have high resolution copies of all of these images and can use them as you wish.

Q: Do we get to choose the photos for our album?

A: I invite all my couples to let me know their favourite image so that it can feature on the cover of their album. You're also welcome to let me know if there are any other particular favourite photos that you'd like included. I will then design your album for you. This is part of the beauty of hiring a professional photographer. A good photographer should be a storyteller as well as an artist and compile a beautiful album with well chosen photos that really tells the story of your special day.

Q: Where can we see examples of your work?

A: I'm a little bit addicted to Instagram so you can see plenty of examples of my work on there (follow @lawlessrose). You can also see a selection of photos from recent weddings in the galleries section of this site.

Q: How long have you been photographing weddings?

A: I've loved photography as long as I can remember. I bought my first Olympus when I was 14 with money I'd earned by helping my nan at her restaurant and absolutely loved that camera. I photographed my first wedding in 2011 - the wedding reception of a very close friend and I loved it. After posting the photos onto Facebook, I had other friends asking me if I'd photograph their wedding and their friends after that. Before I knew it, Lawless Rose Photography was born...around the same time as my son!

Q: Do you have a favourite venue?

A: You may notice that many of the photos on this website were taken at The Old Kent Barn or Winters Barns. I absolutely love these venues and it's great to have such a good relationship with the teams there. I'm a big fan of Nurstead Court and Hayne House too - really personal service at both of these venues and a family friendly feel as well as stunning grounds and a gorgeous new orangery at Hayne House. I grew up by the seaside so venues like The Dover Marina, Botany Bay and The East Quay are all winners in my books too. I also love a fairytale and am drawn to really beautiful spaces so Leeds Castle, Knowlton Court, The Gardens at Yalding, The Orangery in Maidstone and Lympne Castle tick lots of boxes for me. Of course, it's always great to go somewhere new and different too - makes my job so exciting!

Q: What do you love about weddings?

A: Everything!!!!! I love the excitement of the bridal prep, I love when the bridesmaids see the bride in her dress, I love it when the father / mother of the bride / groom cries - for that matter, I just love happy tears generally! I'm a sucker for a confetti photo, am a massive fan of the giggles (they make for great shots) and always enjoy seeing and capturing the little details and thoughtful touches that can make your wedding a truly personal and unique experience. The first dance has been known to make me blub and nothing makes me happier than when your guests go crazy with you on the dance floor.
